Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

At the beginning of the school year we laid out some potential Z School service projects and the unanimous vote among the girls was to work with animals. This entire trip was born out of volunteering at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah.

Our first night was spent at a campground right outside of Pink Coral Sand Dunes State Park. We had a little time to play in the gorgeous pink sand. We learned that first day that red sand/dirt stains...

Tennie rescued some polliwogs whose pond had almost completely evaporated. She kept them overnight in a baggie with a little of the water but the water froze overnight (yes, we camped in 26 degree weather!) Luckily the polliwogs thawed with the water and we found a bigger pond where they could reach their full potential...


Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is a very well-organized place. We met people from around the country who had come to volunteer. And we met a lot of animals that the girls wanted to take home with us! If you are looking to adopt a pet, this is a great place to go.

Our first assignment was training puppies. We were trained on some things to do if the puppies showed unfavorable behavior, and then we played with them to socialize them in preparation for their new homes.




We then took several dogs on walks on some trails. We had a good time observing the different habits and characteristics of different dogs!

In the afternoon we worked with the cats, all of which had cancer. They were so playful, and often cuddly. Since I'm not a big fan of cats and the girls are slowly accepting that we'll probably never have one, they loved this opportunity.



The girls wanted to cancel the remainder of the trip to keep on volunteering, but we managed to pull them away and make our way to the Grand Canyon.
