In our planning I was the one who really pushed to go to Denmark. When we decided to make this a "Finding Your Roots" trip, Geoff got on board. I didn't know much about Denmark, aside it being where Geoff's ancestors are from. After exhausting ourselves silly in England, we were looking forward to the slower pace of Denmark, but it, too, lured us in, and we realized there wasn't enough time to take it all in.
The Copenhagen airport had beautiful wood floors and incredible food options. As a matter-of-fact, I had the best croissant I have ever had in that airport. It was a good first impression!
Our hotel was right on a wide canal. We settled in and then walked to Paper Island where we heard there was good "street food". The weather was cold and wet.
The street food was in a large warehouse-type building with dozens of little, funky stalls selling all sorts of amazingly delicious and nutritious food. Who knew Copenhagen was such a foodie paradise!
We saw a sign that stated that 95% of food in Copenhagen institutions is local and organic. Impressive.
There were so many people out and about, riding bikes, walking, and eating outside, even in what seemed like very dreary weather. The bike paths were everywhere. Even when we eventually went out of the city we noticed they connected every town across the country. After our trip I was talking with Geoff's grandmother who said her family took trips across the country on bike every summer (maybe 70-90 miles a day). Everyone did. It still is a healthy and active country.
The famous area called Nyhaven was so charming. Hans Christian Andersen lived on this street. Today it is filled with restaurants and apartments and BOATS. Boats are another seemingly common form of transportation. We waited more than once for drawbridges to allow personal boats by.
We walked down a shopping street and through many squares. The architecture is so simple compared to London or Paris, but with small, unique details throughout.
Most of Geoff's family celebrates Christmas with a lot of Danish influence. We discovered Christmas decorations in the basic tourist shops and nearly cleaned one store out as we texted family back home taking orders.
Ceci felt her Viking blood as we shopped.
By the end of this day of travel, and after a quick trip through only a part of the city, we knew wished we had more time in Copenhagen.
