We spent the night in little town called Lucca and agonized over the fact that Rome was only two hours away, and Cinque Terra only about 30 minutes away! But it was time to call it quits. We were ready to get back to our normal life. Believe it or not, I was excited to do laundry and cook meals again! Nothing like living out of a suitcase on the road for three weeks to appreciate a little of life's monotony!
We fit two stops in on our drive home. First was Pisa. We drove into a non-inspiring looking town and there is was, the leaning tower. We parked the car, were bombarded by North Africans selling purses, and walked into the walled area that is the gem of Pisa. There was a wide open field of something we didn't realize we missed so much...grass. Because we live on a rugged coast there aren't wide open level spaces, and if there is any grass at all in France it has a Please Stay Off the Grass sign every few feet. We spent an hour playing on the grass and about 15 minutes looking at the beautiful buildings. The green against the white marble was so refreshing!
Did you know that this tower started to tilt even before the third story was completed in 1274?
