Marine Biology Camp - Day Seven

Happy 4th of July everyone! This is LOD for the day, Abby. Today was super fun and relaxing day. We had delicious pancakes and bacon for breakfast, a perfect way to start out the day. After breakfast we left for snorkelling at a new location (Lindsay's Reef). The water was a beautiful combination of turquoise over the sand and navy over the reefs. Since its Independence Day, Jesse and Katie let everyone swim with their buddy around the reef self guided. It was so fun exploring all the reef had to offer. There were tons of brightly colored fish swimming in between the coral covered rocks. It was like entering a new world. Tennie and Miles pointed out a a new kind of sting ray called a Yellow Stingray to Alex, Caden, Kaylin and I. Once we were finished snorkelling, we played a fun game in the sand. We then swam in the water for a little while. Ginger, Caden, Oliver, Miles, Tennie, Jaquin and I had fun swimming in the crystal clear water. We drove back to Gerace for lunch.





We enjoyed a delicious lunch of macaroni casserole and salad. We then packed all of our stuff into the truck and drove into Cockburn Town, a local town with places to buy souvenirs and tons of friendly locals. We split into two groups and explore the town for part of the afternoon. Many of us got fun keepsakes to remember our trip by. We also saw beautiful stain glass in one of the local churches. A local man with a guitar had a great conversation with one of the groups about how the islands are very relaxed and what the people are like. We then drove to a snack bar to get ice cream. It was delicious! There were a few young kids there that we talked to about their life on the island. When one of the little girls got upset, Sara gave her a hug to cheer her up. It was so interesting to see what the similarities and differences were between our culture and theirs. The Bahamian culture is more laid back, which was so different than what I was used to. After saying goodbye to some of our new friends, we went to a beautiful beach filled with tide pools to write letters to our future selves. Broadreach will send us the letters we wrote about the trip in about six months so we can remember all of the good times we had in the Bahamas! When everyone finished writing, we took a bunch of silly pictures by the water and had fun splashing around in the waves. It was really hard to take a jumping picture with so many people, but it was very fun to try!
When we got back, a scrumptious dinner of chicken, rice, and mashed potatoes was waiting for us. After all eating a large helping, we did Glums and Glows outside. Kaylin, Ginger, Tennie, Katie and I all helped build a campfire on the beach for the older group. Everyone then had a fun basketball game before going inside for a dance party in the dark with glow sticks. After dancing for a while, we watched Finding Nemo. This left everyone pretty tired, so we all went to bed for a deep sleep to refuel for a new exciting day.
