Marine Biology Camp - Day Three

Sand, Sun and Waves

Hello Moms and Dads! My name is Tennie, and I was LOD (Leader Of the Day) today.

This morning, we woke up after a hot night to the humid beauty of San Salvador! We went to a delicious breakfast, then quickly changed into our swimsuits so we could quickly get into that beautiful crystal water!!! We hopped back into the truck (I think Kaylin told you about it yesterday) and drove to North Point, our first snorkelling spot.

It was AMAZING!! Some of the students had never snorkelled, and they really enjoyed it. We swam around a bit, looking at the different fish and coral. We saw lots of brain coral, feather duster worms, sea fans, queen conches, Bermuda chubs, Spotlight parrotfish, and a few Grey angelfish. We snorkelled there for about an hour and a half, before heading back to have a yummy lunch.

Then we got back in the truck to go to Rocky Point for more snorkelling. The water was more clear here and we saw even more cool fish than at North Point. Sara, Abby, Ginger, Caden, Jesse (one of our instructors), Miles, and I saw a great barracuda! Some of us (myself included) were a little scared, but Jesse told us "they do have teeth, but they shouldn't bother us,". Alex, Oliver, Kaylin, Joaquin, and Katie (our other instructor) discovered a HUGE coral reef that was teeming with lots and lots of colorful fish. Katie pointed out fire coral, an orange species of coral with white tips that once touched can sting you. Everyone avoided the reef for a few minutes after that, but eventually we all drifted back over to watch the world of sea life. Eventually we got out of the water and played some games on the beach for a while. We played baby turtle, sharks and minnows, and frisbee, then headed home. We had some time to chill in our rooms before we ate dinner. Then we headed over to lab 3 to look at fish books and get a little lesson on fish ID from Katie. Today was a long, fun, and tiring day, and we look forward to more days ahead! everyone says hi!
This is LOD Tennie saying goodnight for now.

P.S: mom and dad say hi to Adele and Ceci for me! i love and miss you!!

Geoff, Adele, Ceci and I are off to explore some of Utah's beauty before going to a family reunion this week.  I'm not sure about internet connection so if updates drop off for awhile, that's why.
